Meet Drs. Amélie van den Brink-El Makkaoui
**The Journey:**
My path to becoming a creative-holistic psychotherapist has been shaped by my passion for psychology, young people, my own mixed heritage—Burkinabé-Dutch (and more)—and an international upbringing that taught me the deep importance of belonging and identity. As a professional with over fifteen years of global experience (East & Western parts of USA, West Africa, East Asia, & Western Europe) I have seen firsthand that every young person possesses an innate resilience; sometimes they get stuck and simply need a different set of tools to access it and thrive.
**Clinical Expertise:**
My work centers on the intersection of ADHD and Neurotrauma. I believe that neurodiversity is not a deficit to be fixed, but a unique way of experiencing the world that requires a tailored, compassionate approach. In 2022, I was honored to receive the Global Health & Pharma Mental Health Award for my work in the Netherlands (under the Child Behavioral Health Network, a network I founded and managed), reflecting my commitment to specialized, high-standard care for young populations.
**The "Whole Me" Philosophy:**
Traditional "talk therapy" often hits a wall when a person is overwhelmed by sensory input or a traumatic experience. My **Whole Me** methodology bridges this gap. By integrating Art Therapy, EFT Tapping, Breathwork, and other scientific modalities I help young people to express what is often "un-wordable," or can't be put into words (often times the mind doesn't have the words for what the whole self went through-body, mind and spirit). This somatic-creative approach allows the nervous system to feel safe enough to heal and thrive. To read further into my approach click here.
**Mission as an Author:**
Next to treating clients, I also write as a way to impart my clinical knowledge to the public. My first book, *"Amélie tames her wild horse,"* was inspired from my past clients who I worked with on managing their anger, a persistent symptom of ADHD and trauma. Their metaphors helped me to want to help other children who cannot access mental health care directly--children infact need metaphors to understand their internal "storms." By teaching children how to "tame" their emotions rather than fear them, we (adults) can empower the next generation with emotional intelligence that lasts a lifetime.
